A Wichita man dubbed the “Taco Hero” received free tacos for a year after helping strangers at Tacos TJ 664. When the restaurant’s payment system failed and only accepted cash, the Shear family didn’t have enough money for their meal. A stranger named Jared gave them a $100 bill, refused repayment, and tipped the staff. Mother Calli Shear posted about the encounter on Facebook group Wichita Food & Booze, asking if anyone knew him. The post went locally viral and Jared was identified. “When I was a young man, I grew up poor,” Jared said. “A family took me in when I needed it the most. They ended up finishing raising me until I turned 18 and moved out on my own.” Restaurant manager Priscila Camacho presented Jared with an honorary certificate and free tacos for the year.
