Rescue Turns Into a Rip‑Off—Then a Public Outcry Turns Into a Windfall

Two hikers rescued from England’s highest peak during hazardous winter weather left without paying their hotel bill or returning borrowed gear—but the public later stepped in to help. The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team spent seven hours bringing the pair down from Scafell Pike on December 29th, calling the mission “avoidable” because one hiker was already injured and using a hospital crutch.

Afterward, a nearby inn offered discounted lodging, yet the hikers departed without paying the roughly $180 bill, failed to thank staff, pushed for more discounts at breakfast, and never returned the borrowed equipment. Attempts to reach them afterward went nowhere. Once the rescue team shared the story publicly, donations surged past $6,800, providing extra support for future rescue operations.
