The Liberty County, Montana sheriff department is reporting that at least three people were killed this afternoon when an Amtrak train derailed in a remote part of the state.
The train, known as The Empire Builder, runs from Chicago to Spokane, where it splits, with some cars destined for Portland, Oregon and others terminating in Seattle.
More than 150 people were on board the train when it left the tracks this afternoon.
The train was traveling just west of Joplin, Montana when the derailment happened.
Pictures on social media show at least one car completely on its side. Witnesses describe passengers trapped, some of them injured and having to be cut free from the wreckage.
Rescue and recovery operations are continuing just west of Joplin, Montana.
