Police in Southampton, Long Island, New York, got what they’re calling a most “unusual 9-1-1 call” over the weekend. Residents called after spotting a baby seal on Sunday (April 3rd), sliding through a parking lot in the hamlet of Riverside and eventually over to a nearby hotel, and then into a traffic circle. A rescue team from the New York Marine Rescue Center was sent out to take the baby harbor seal to a rehab facility in Riverhead. Rescuers say the young marine creature was in “good condition.” It’s thought the seal swam up the Peconic River, then climbed out and subsequently traveled a few hundred feet to the traffic circle. Experts say there could soon be similar cases as we’re entering “seal season.”
