Patrick Winters has a Disabled Veteran license plate, but in 2022, Texas added an extra layer of bureaucracy that he didn’t know about: even with the license plate on his car, he can’t park in a handicapped-only parking space without also having a placard hanging in his windshield. That’s why his car was towed while he was inside a San Antonio laundromat, leaving him stranded; he needs a walker to get around. Once the towing company figured out the issue, it not only returned Winters’ car with an apology and without charge, the company also bought him a washer and dryer for his home.
