A young girl who nearly died during a swim meet was saved thanks to the quick action of Savannah Fire personnel who were prepared to step in because of the department’s continued focus on basic life support training.
In March, the Savannah Fire Department responded to a reported drowning at the Chatham County Aquatic Center. When fire personnel arrived, 11-year-old Mindy Mercer was initially breathing before going into cardiac arrest.
Personnel quickly began CPR. Shortly after, EMS arrived on scene and Mindy was loaded onto a stretcher. Fire personnel continued these life saving measures while leaving the aquatic center when Mindy regained breathing and a pulse.
This week, Mindy along with her family met some of the firefighters who answered the call that day. Personnel who helped save Mindy’s life include Advanced Firefighter Phil Haag from Engine 7, Captain Brian Smith, and Advanced Firefighter Mario Smith from Rescue 2.
