Overnight, more than a dozen earthquakes, including 13 within a 25-minute span, struck parts of California, particularly near El Centro in the southern border region.
The United States Geological Survey's Shake Alert system was activated, with at least one earthquake estimated to be above magnitude 5.0, prompting alerts to cell phones.
According to The Guardian, the cluster of earthquakes occurred just two days after a 4.6 magnitude quake near Malibu. Although no major damage or injuries were reported, earthquake expert Dr. Lucy Jones mentioned a 5% chance of a larger earthquake in southern California in the near future.
A 5.7 magnitude quake was felt in Hawaii earlier that day but it was unrelated to the quakes in California.
