Cafe Owner's Help for Homeless Vet Rallies a Community to Join In

A simple act of kindness by a Michigan café owner has transformed the life of a homeless veteran—and inspired an entire community to step in and help.

Bridget Watson, the owner of Cafe Sweets, first met Don, a homeless Army veteran, when he stopped by her café looking for cans and bottles to return for money. She quickly learned more about him—his past work as a trucker, his love for dogs and plants, and the struggles he faced, including ongoing health issues and homelessness.

Determined to help, Watson initially offered to hire Don, but his health made it impossible. Instead, she found another way. She paid for a motel stay and turned to social media to rally support. The response was overwhelming.

“Somebody donated their winter coat, which was a hunting coat, hats, gloves, scarves, masks, hygiene stuff,” Watson told Fox 2 News. “Everyone has stepped in.”

One generous local even offered Don an apartment for just $50 a month, and another person volunteered to cover the rent for the rest of the year. “He’s beyond grateful,” Watson said. “He doesn’t ask for much—just Pepsi and Folgers instant coffee.”

This inspiring story is a testament to the power of community and compassion. Watson’s kindness set off a ripple effect, proving that small gestures can lead to life-changing outcomes.
